Dementia Friendly Swimming Sessions starting Friday 21st October 2016
Nottingham City Council is working in partnership with the Nottingham Alzheimer’s Society and the Amateur Swimming Association to deliver a dementia friendly swimming project from October 2015-2017.
From this week, dementia friendly sessions will take place every week at three of the City Council Leisure Centre's. What's more, anyone that signs up over October and November will receive their first swim for FREE*.
What makes the session dementia friendly?
A diagnosis of dementia doesn’t mean you have to stop taking part in the activities you enjoy. Swimming is a great all-round activity that is beneficial to everyone. It is particularly beneficial for someone living with dementia as the sensation of being in the water can provide a calming and soothing effect. Our Dementia Friendly swimming sessions allow you to continue doing something you love, or even give you the chance to try something new, in a safe and supportive environment.
Because we know that you might need a little extra help during your visit, we have specially trained staff and volunteers on hand to support you, all of whom have completed dementia awareness training. You will be offered support if you need it at reception, in the changing area and on poolside, giving you the confidence to enjoy swimming as part of an active lifestyle.
We’ve also been working on improving our facilities to help make things easier for you. This varies from pool to pool but may include better signage. We encourage you to come along to the swim session 30 minutes before the start where Kris the Project Support Officer will be there to meet you. We have a cafe at Harvey Hadden Sports Village and vending facilities for refreshments and snacks at Clifton Leisure Centre and Ken Martin Leisure Centre.
